چکیده

0.0 Introduction Anong, a Tibeto-Burman language of Yunnan, is in its last generation—in 1999, there were 62 fluent speakers left, all over 50. The descriptive material on Anong is quite limited; what there is all comes from the work of Sun Hongkai, particularly 1988, 1999a, and a preliminary, but still useful wordlist (Sun ms.); a little additional data can be found in Sun Hongkai 1999b and Sun and Li 2001. Cf. also the beginning of Thurgood 2003, which describes the language setting more fully. In Sun 1999a, Sun makes a number of observations about the path of decline being followed by Anong, a language he has been documenting off and on since 1960. This piece augments that work, providing data to substantiate many of those observations and teasing out, where plausible, which changes represent largely internally-motivated attrition, which changes represent external contact with Lisu (and, secondarily, Chinese), and where and how the two mutually reinforce one another. In doing so, we draw on data from the Nungish languages (Trung (Dulong), Nujiang, and Rawang), the languages most-closely related to Anong and on data from Lisu and secondarily Chinese, the languages Anong speakers are most intimately in contact with.

The causatives in Sun Hongkai’s Anong: language death and rapid restructuring

Introduction. The Anong people, numbering approximately 6500, mainly live in Fugong County in the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province (roughly 98.7°E and 27.1°N) on the tablelands on both sides of the Nujiang River. To the west is Myanmar, where the closely-related Rawang live; to the north is the Tibetan Autonomous Region. Anong, an autonym, is a Tibeto-Burman language closel...

Bias in the study of prediction of change: a Monte Carlo simulation study of the effects of selective attrition and inappropriate modeling of regression toward the mean

BACKGROUND Medical researchers often use longitudinal observational studies to examine how risk factors predict change in health over time. Selective attrition and inappropriate modeling of regression toward the mean (RTM) are two potential sources of bias in such studies. METHOD The current study used Monte Carlo simulations to examine bias related to selective attrition and inappropriate mo...

Convergence and Divergence in Obsolescence On Sound Change in Southeastern Pomo

Previous research on language attrition has distinguished between internally and externally motivated change and between convergent and divergent change, with most literature focusing on speech communities that have undergone either one or the other type of change. In this paper, I argue that these types of change may coexist within the same community or even the same speaker with the result th...

Design, construction and calibration of single channel sun-photometer for study of aerosols

Aerosols are tiny liquid or solid particles suspended in the air have a strong influence on air quality, human health and climate change. Sun-photometer is a tool for measuring the optical and physical characteristics of aerosols by using sunlight at various wavelengths from the Earth surface. In this paper, the design, construction, and calibration of a single channel sun-photometer is present...
